It seems like the forecasters are right on target with their prediction of high heat, humidity and possible rain this week. I got out of the gardens for a while this afternoon to cool down. Much of the day was spent weeding, watering and looking at the growth of our crops. Let me tell you that things have been growing faster than the weeds in the last week! Speaking of weeks, some areas had very little weeds and others had a bit more than last week, but keeping on them weekly seems to be knocking them back overall.
The peas have heard our cry for them to fatten up! Actually, I think it has more to do with the trimming and extra water, but nonetheless, I picked two and a half pounds this morning and will add “Pick peas” to my task list every day this week. If you want peas and can get here this week, let me know. A waiting list will be made and as the peas come in, I’ll contact the next person on the list.
The herbs are also growing double time right now. Basil, Italian parsley, rosemary, oregano, sage, and lemon thyme are all in need of trimming. Do you want pesto herbs this week? I can put together basil and parsley for that ($3 per bundle) and you can make a cool pasta salad, save some pesto for another night and spread it on toasted French bread (adding a glass of wine is optional). You can freeze pesto in small portions for use later, too. Click Here for a list of pesto recipes. I like to use safflower seed instead of hard-to-find and expensive pine nuts.
I can pick a couple of bags of lettuce Wednesday morning. They will be mostly green varieties with a little red and bi-color leaves mixed in. This week’s heat may finish off a bunch of these plants.
One last note: Our friend, Jeff Lauber, is bringing us 24 pounds of little red potatoes on Wednesday! They’re the Norland variety that he’s shared with us in the past, just small ones (baby, boilers, B size or whatever you want to call them). They’ll be $2 per pound. If you want some of these, let me know. These will hold until Saturday if you want to wait to pick them up.
Have a great night, and remember to use the Contact button in the lower right corner. I’m off to pit more cherries, so I’ll respond to your messages a bit later…
