As the weather has signaled an early fall approaching, I’ve decided that my hands are needed in the gardens tomorrow. Several things got done today, but it barely makes a dent. There are seeds to plant, beds to prep for broccolini transplants, amendments need to be put under fall crops to keep them happy, and flowers need to be deadheaded. Sure, the raspberries need to be picked, too. Oh, the weeds need to be pulled, some perennials need to be sheared back, and of course, the grass needs to be mowed again. Let’s face it, this month has been filled with “must do” tasks and the “should do” things have been stacking up. First, it was too hot and humid, and then it was raining or muddy. Now is the time for me to get a ton of things ready for fall crops before some high temperatures come in next week again. The acorn, butternut and small spaghetti squash are looking pretty good, and there are lots of small fruits on the vines. The white patty pan squash that we’re testing got trimmed and some supports yesterday. There should be flowers on them by the weekend. Ornamental gourds are starting to set little cuties, and more lettuce and kale will be seeded into a flat tomorrow.
There will be fresh granola, biscotti, and baked goods for Saturday morning. If you have a request – send it over!
Send me your request for Wednesday pick up by using the “contact me” button in the lower right part of your screen. I’ll get orders written up and pick first thing in the morning. Then, you’re free to coordinate a pick up between noon and 6:00. I’m hoping to knock out some tasks in the morning before those tiny pirate bugs are up and biting! They were fierce this afternoon and their bite is much bigger than expected.
