Please join me out front tomorrow morning from 9 until noon for some fresh stuff! It’s the middle of September and we still have beautiful, if slightly smaller, crops coming in. Want to know what was not a smaller harvest today? Can you guess? If you said “cucumbers” then you are right!! There are about 60 cucumbers again for Saturday morning, but the plants are looking tattered and tired. There are still nice cucumbers filling out and a small number of flowers, but overall, they are on the way out. The first planting has slowed tremendously and will probably just give up overnight some time soon. The second planting is greener, fuller, and more productive but it is still in decline with the arrival of shorter days. The moral of the story is that if you want cucumbers – come and get them before they are gone!
Slicing tomatoes are limited as they take much longer to ripen with shorter days, but the warm days ahead and plenty of watering will help the remaining tomatoes (a decent amount) fill out and ripen. In contrast, the tiny tomatoes are kicking it into high gear. Peppers are just skipping along because this is their favorite weather. Many are red or turning red now, so there is a good color selection in the bin for Saturday. If you have a need for a “batch” of peppers for freezing, making relish, or using on a veggie tray – just get in touch and give me an idea of what you need.
Now that we are going to just have Saturday farmstands, it’s a good time for me to start a request list for veggies that need homes on other days. If there’s something that you would like on random days when they’re ready – please use the “Contact” button in the lower right corner of your display.
Saturday is the 10th anniversary event at Rescued in Silvis. This is a boutique resale shop that uses their proceeds to help local animals in need and they’ve donated almost $1M (that’s a million) to help with vet and other animal expenses locally. Last week, you bought tomato soup kits and $40 was donated to them to further their mission. Thank you to everyone who supported that! This week, the sales of dipped pretzel rods will be donated to them! I also stocked my display in their shop with sugar scrubs, lotion bars, rollerballs, room sprays, foot soaks & scrubs, and pillow sprays. I donated pretzel rods, cookies, and chai latte mix for their in-store bake sale, too.
I’m about to disinfect the kitchen and bake focaccia breads and then make dipped pretzel rods – yum! Then, I need to pick flowers and organize a few things. Ok, let me figure out what we have for tomorrow…
