Memorial Day weekend is in the rear view mirror and June is fast approaching! It’s time for a garden update post. It’s very wet outside, so writing a little seems like a good use of time.
The gardens have not appreciated all the topsy-turvy weather. Hot, cold, wet, dry, dry, dry, soaked, cloudy and so windy. But, things are growing. Maybe slower than expected, but still growing.
Beans – struggled to get sprouted in soil that turned cold, but doing much better and leafing out.
Beets – the greens are looking so pretty and bulbs beginning to size up.
Broccoli – regular and mini are doing great in the hoop house, getting bigger, should show heads soon.
Cabbage – the last bit of cabbage seeds were planted, so there should be some small heads in June.
Carrots – great germination, and a second seeding has gone in. These take a while.
Chard – one row is almost ready to pick, the other got plucked by birds, so reseeded it.
Cucumbers – sprouted great, then stalled in cold soil, but leafing out now. More to seed next week.
Garlic – most seems to have frozen during that long deep freeze, so we only have a dozen or so.
Kale – red and green varieties are growing great!
Lettuce – great, early crops! Just pulled the first patch and replanted the last of this spring’s lettuce.
Onions – said I wasn’t growing them, but they went into the garlic beds when the garlic failed.
Peas – one bed was eaten by rabbits, but several new beds were seeded and the older ones are starting to flower!!! I know how much we all love fresh peas, so there are more than ever planted! I may need help when it comes tine to pick 🙂
Peppers – doing great, but need more warm days.
Radishes – we may have some ready this week/weekend!
Squash – Set out baby plants that will flower soon, and seeded more (includes zucchini)
Tomatoes – the early Defiant plants are big, flowering, and we are on track for tomatoes by the end of June, if it stays warm. The others are growing slowly, but doing well considering soil and air temperatures. More tomatoes planted this year than last year.
Flowers – most are doing great! Seeded two rounds of zinnia and sunflowers, seeded celosia (new peachy color), set out plants of blue ageratum, yarrow, and snapdragon. More seeds to go in a couple weeks from now. Many perennials like iris and a few others have come and gone so quickly. But, peonies are opening! I can pick a few peony bouquets today, so let me know if you want some!
I think we’ll be open on Saturday morning. There should be lettuce, kale, radishes, a few herbs, flowers, jams, seasoned salts, chai latte mix, potato soup mix, and some body products. More to come about Saturday…
Thanks for reading to the end! Hopefully, I’ve remembered most of the veggies in the updates. Here’s to a dry rest of the week and weekend!
